People with type 2 diabetes are unable to make enough insulin to meet the body's need, or unable to respond normally to the insulin that they do produce. When this happens, sugar builds up in the blood. Over time, complications of high blood sugar may damage your eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and other major arteries.

The sugar that builds up in the blood of individuals with diabetes is the glucose which comes from starchy or sweet things.

 

There are many factors contributing to the development of type 2 diabetes.

  • Being female
