More than 100 million people have diabetes and almost 90% of these have type 2 diabetes. In some countries nearly half the population has type 2 diabetes. Through out Europe, an estimate of 5% of the population have this condition. About 8,000 to 10,000 people are newly diagnosed with diabetes every year.

The number of people with diabetes is steadily increasing throughout the world. There are expected to be more than 220 million people with type 2 diabetes by the year 2015 and more by the year 2020.   Type 2 diabetes usually appears in people over the age of 40 who are usually over weight. A survey in UK revealed at least 8 out of every 100 people over 65 have type 2 diabetes.   If you are diabetic, it is likely that one in four of your close relatives are also diabetic.

Unfortunately, people with type 2 diabetes are more likely to develop a number of related diseases, and ha a shorter life expectancy that other people.
