Function

Essential in the production of red blood cells and for the maintenance of a normal pregnancy as it is involved in growth and reproduction. Recently suggested that a deficiency in pregnancy may cause Spina bifida in the new born.

Usage

Used in the treatment of specific anaemias such as megaloblastic anaemia, anaemia of pregnancy and the malabsorption syndrome, as well as in normal pregnancy. A daily dose of 5-10 mg. by mouth is usually sufficient.
